How can I improve my Apple Pencil Pro's handwriting accuracy?

I just got a new ipad air and a pencil pro. I assumed that like most things AI related, handwriting recognition would be passable. It's abysmally bad and there doesn't appear to be a global function to make it better? And on top of that, the shortcuts for converting writing to text in most apps are awkward and require multiple steps. I feel like I was badly ripped off. What am I missing? Is there some way to improve this? I tried Nebo but the UI is terrible. Feel like I need to go back to a moleskin - hopefully this is something Apple is working to improve, both in terms of the quality of text conversion and also usability?

I think you may be underestimating the challenge involved in handwriting recognition. And perhaps not understanding the AI role in it.

Despite what the popular press might have let you to believe, not everything relies on "AI." You can't train an AI to recognize handwriting the way you can train it to answer questions about the Spanish Civil War or the best way to cook leeks. There is no enormous trove of handwriting data out there just waiting to be scraped.

Everyone's handwriting is different, and most people's is pretty awful. The best way to improve handwriting recognition is to stick as closely as possible to what handwriting looks like in books teaching penmanship. This is just like improving the accuracy of speech-to-text by enunciating carefully and not speaking too fast.

I find that the handwriting recognition is pretty good as long as I slow down and don't get sloppy. I recognize, though, how hard that can be.

Nobody here can tell you what Apple is work on, unless Apple has announced it publicly. We are all just users like you trying to help each other by exchanging experiences (plus a few non-technical Apple personnel here to keep the forum running smoothly).

Perhaps if you gave a few more details, other users with more experience using handwriting recognition could give you some tips and insight.

For example, which model iPad Air do you have, what version of iPadOS is it running, and which apps have you been trying to use?
