Can anyone provide advice how I can recover a deleted file on my MacBook please? I cleared my downloads and have since realised, I had an important file saved there that I had been updating for some time. I don't have a backup.

If it's not in the Bin (the very right hand side icon on the dock at the bottom of the screen) then it's probably gone for good. You could try downloading a utility like DiskDrill (others are available) which might be able to recover it, but no guarantees.

I was looking in the finder for deleted files and couldn't find it. Can't believe I've never spotted that bin!!
Now you need to start backing up your documents, pictures, videos, etc. so you never have to worry about it again.
