How do I locate AirPods 4 using 'Find My' when the last location is home?

My daughter has lost her AirPods 4 (we have the case), on ‘find my’ the last location is home, would the AirPods of had to be present for this location to show meaning they are in the house somewhere or could this just be from the case? There is a ‘sound pending’ we are unable to mark them as lost on the app. Any advice?
