Can’t find information anymore regarding Apple’s 1 year limited battery warranty, 80% health within 1 year, free replacement.

I am sure most of us senior volunteers here know that Apple will replace your iPhone battery under warranty for free if it hits 80% battery health within 1 year. I was responding to a question regarding this the other day and can no longer find any documentation on it. Did Apple update their terms or?

iPhone 15 & 16......1,000

Everything else.....500

Nothing has changed. Seems like we have had this discussion previously. That was when I noted that it was important to include the disclaimer of "under ideal conditions" in discussions. Unfortunately "ideal conditions" are not defined.

iPhone Owners

Batteries of iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of their original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. Batteries of iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80% of their original capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions.

Actual battery performance depends on a number of variables, including how iPhone is used and charged regularly. The one‑year warranty includes service coverage for a defective battery, in addition to rights provided under local consumer laws. If it is out of warranty, Apple offers a battery service. Prices and terms may vary.

If you are looking for something to the effect of....."users get a free battery if the Maximum Capacity falls below 80% in the first year".....that never existed, although we see that "quote" often on the boards.

Offhand, I can't recall a post from a user complaining that his battery fell below 80% in the first year, but Apple refused to replace the part under warranty, but they may exist.

As with any part replacement under warranty, Apple always has the final say.

I just spoke with Apple Support on the phone, the advisor and I both agreed that Apple must have updated their terms and conditions. They said that they can run remote diagnostics on the iPhone and determine whether your battery is defective, then give a replacement battery at no additional charge at their discretion. They take a look at your usage, conditions, etc and determine.

From the link I posted,

“Do you have AppleCare+?

Your country or region offers AppleCare+ for this product.”

“Your product is eligible for a battery replacement at no additional cost if you have AppleCare+ and your product's battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity.”

AppleCare Products - iPhone - Apple

Here’s the fine print from the link above.

  1. “Service coverage is available only for iPhone and its original included accessories or for batteries that retain less than 80% of their original capacity. Replacement equipment that Apple provides as part of the repair or replacement service may contain new or previously used genuine Apple parts that have been tested and pass Apple functional requirements. There are no service fees or deductibles for mechanical failures. For complete details, see the AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions and the Theft and Loss Insurance Documentation applicable to your state.“

I believe under the free warranty, there is a cycle count requirement as well. For computers I recall the wording was UNDER 80% at less than 100 cycles for a device still under warranty MAY quality for a battery replacement at no cost to the owner.

For phones the cycle count appears to vary. MacTracker datable now shows a maximum cycle count for each phone model; some show 500 and others 1000.

MacTracker is free in the Mac App Store if you want to check those numbers for a specific model.

The standard one year term is in effect.

This is the current one year standard warranty,

“WHAT IS COVERED BY THIS WARRANTY?

Apple Inc. of One Apple Park Way, Cupertino, California, U.S.A. 95014 (“Apple”) warrants the Apple-branded iPhone, iPad, iPod, Apple TV or HomePod hardware product and the Apple-branded accessories contained in the original packaging (“Apple Product”) against defects in materials and workmanship when used normally in accordance with Apple's published guidelines for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser ("Warranty Period"). Apple’s published guidelines include but are not limited to information contained in technical specifications, user manuals and service communications.”

Then exclusions are covered.

Seems as the answer is unclear though.

With warranties.....there never are any clear and definite 1,2,3 bullet points that clearly explain things.

Kind of like users asking if they buy a phone in Canada, will it be covered under the warranty in Italy. When you look at the title of the actual document, it says that iPhones are covered, but buried in the document you see things like not all options will be available in all countries.
