insertion point is invisible in save dialog in all apps, OS 15.3.2

Across a variety of apps, like Text, NisusWriter Pro, PhotoShop, etc. the insertion point is invisible in the save dialog. For example, if I create a new document, & go to save it, it says "untitled", with no insertion point visible. If I press keys for "cmd-left arrow" & then "forward delete", the "u" will be deleted, as expected, but there is no insertion point visible throughout the process. However, inside a text document itself, the insertion point is visible, as it is while I'm typing this question.

How do I fix this?
