What should I do if my Apple Watch won't unpair?

I followed the instructions to unpair a watch and got an error message the unpairing may not have completed. There were instructions to do something on the watch to complete the process but I can’t remember what they said and the message disappeared. What should I do on the watch to complete unpairing?
