Unable to access macOS recovery mode using command r nor any other functions/combinations.

Am locked out of my New MacBook Air and unable to access macOS recovery mode. I'm connected to external power, pressing command R and holding both down before I hit power button but system just goes to login screen. There's the problem; my password has changed since migrating data from old Mac, and yeah I've tried the old MacBook passcode as well. I need to access macOS to resolve the password issue.
