How do I determine if a friend has blocked me or changed their phone number?

I tried calling one of my friends and when they were unable to pickup, I would hear their voicemail. Now, since they didn't pick up, I hear "Please leave your message for..."I wonder if I have been blocked or if they got a new number or whatever, could be several causes
