Why do .movpkg files lose surround sound when streaming from Mac to Apple TV?

I took me a while to make time to figure out what was happening and to correlate situations with performance, but here it is. I need help to make my movie experience consistent across all of my iTunes purchased movies.

First, the "computer app" on my Apple TV does not show all the movies that I have purchased over the years. It appears that the difference is that .m4v files will display in "computer app" but .movpkg files will not. All movies, whether .m4v or .movpkg, display in my "Library" in the "Apple TV app". This is a little frustrating.

Second, all .m4v files, when accessed through the "computer app" or through my "Library" in the "Apple TV app", play in surround sound. Movies in the .movpkg file format, which only display in my "Library" in the "Apple TV app" do not play in surround sound. This is hugely frustrating.

I really need to know how to address this. Have I inadvertently done something incorrectly? Thanks in advance for any help.

(1) HLS media (.movpkg) isn’t support for Home Sharing, unfortunately. It affects more than just the Apple TV box; iPhone and iPad also lack these files for Home Sharing. So I think it is already excluded on the source Mac. Let Apple know about your wishes for this: Product Feedback - Apple

(2) Media downloads may not have surround sound, unless specified. See the checkboxes in the TV app Settings, in the Playback tab. You may need to re-download the files with stereo audio, if multichannel audio is available for those.

if you mean using airplay then I don't believe that ever supported anything but stereo

if you mean by it accessing a shared lib on a computer and or a NAS then try using

the vlc player app in the app store of the appletv, the normal apple video app support rather few video formats compared to the vlc player

Why does Apple persist in going backwards, becoming increasingly limiting with its products and releases? I know, profit. It is, after all, all about the money. To think that I came to Apple in the 90s because they supported their products and ensured backwards compatibility. Those days are gone, to our collective detriment, but to Apple's shareholders' glee as we dance to the puppeteer's twitches.

I do not wish to chase workaround solutions to offset artificial limitations. Can not a choice of movie download formats be offered? Argh!

AirPlay Screen Mirroring will have stereo audio, but in-app AirPlay controls should support surround sound. You may still need to specify that track, though.

The Audio Controls in e.g. the TV app has a selectable option in the Audio Control overlay, to ‘Prefer AC3 Passthrough’, when available.

Apple Silicon Macs connected to a surround sound receiver would also have an ‘HDMI Passthrough’ option for audio, which could include Dolby Atmos support.
