CarPlay disconnects during a phone call with iPhone 15 Pro Max

This is going to be very long since extensive troubleshooting has been done on this without any success.

Problem: With the iPhone 15 Pro Max using AT&T and using a wired USB A to USB C data and charging cable, intermittently during a phone call, whether initiated by me or received by me, Apple Car Play will disappear from the Lincoln (Ford) Sync 3 infotainment system. The call will then appear in the built in Lincoln Bluetooth system so the call does not drop.

Apple Car Play can usually be presented again in the infotainment system by unplugging either side of the cable and reconnecting it and the call will then reappear in Apple Car Play.

Facts:

Lincoln Sync 3 is using the latest software version 3.4 build 23188

The Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Apple Car Play entries have been deleted and rebuilt in the iPhone and Sync 3 multiple times.

iPhone is using iOS 18.4 and this problem has existed since the iPhone was purchased, which had iOS 15 whatever on it at the time.

The Infotainment system has been soft and hard rebooted multiple times. Doing a hard reboot requires all car settings to be manually reinput including the Lincoln Way app on the iPhone.

Multiple USB A to USB C data and charging combination cables have been used, no difference.

The USB hub in the car was replaced with a USB A and USB C hub, no change using either USB A to USB C or USB C to USB C data and charging combination cables.

Using a wireless dongle was ineffective.

Using a USB A to USB C adapter was ineffective.

The infotainment system APM (processor) was replaced by Lincoln, no change.

The car battery was replaced as it's CCA was below it's CCA spec, no change.

The eSIM was deleted and reinstalled by AT&T, no change.

Used a combination USB A and 12 volt lighter adapter to USB C cable, no change.

Low power mode is off on the iPhone.

Bluetooth is on in the iPhone.

Wi-Fi is on in the iPhone.

Cellular data is on and data roaming is off on the iPhone.

Personal hotspot is off on the iPhone.

Wi-Fi calling is off on the iPhone.

Car Play is allowed in Screen Time -> Content and Privacy Restrictions

The car does not have wireless Apple Car Play.

I have the opinion at this point, after doing all of this troubleshooting and hardware replacement on the car after 6+ months of troubleshooting, that the issue is with the iPhone 15 Pro Max itself.

Alright, I have good news. Last night, I went through the process in this article: If you can't update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support. So far, this issue appears to be resolved for me. I'll detail the steps I took below:

It was an extremely frustrating process. I used a Windows PC with the Apple Devices application installed. The Apple Devices application leaves much to be desired. If you plan to attempt this, I would suggest trying it on a Mac if possible. When using a Mac, this whole process is completed using Finder. This way you might avoid some of the issues I'll mention below. Doing it on a Windows PC required a lot of patience and perseverance.

With the Apple Devices app running, I connected my iPhone 15 Pro Max to my Windows PC using Apple's usb-c cable. I changed the settings on the app to back the entire phone up to the computer and went through the back up process. If any of the settings aren't applying correctly or it's not taking your password to setup the encrypted backup, just unplug your phone and plug it back in. I opted for the encrypted backup option because it said that without it, it won't backup any sensitive info from the phone like passwords, etc.

Once the backup process was completed, I left my phone connected to the computer via usb-c and put the phone in recovery mode. To put the iPhone 15 Pro Max in recovery mode, press volume up, press volume down, then press and hold the power button until the screen displays a power cord and laptop on it (continue holding the button even after you see the apple displayed on the screen). It's the same process as a forced restart, but you continue to hold the power button until the restore screen is displayed.

Once the phone is in recovery mode and connected to the computer, a prompt will appear from the apple devices app saying that there is a problem with the phone and that it must be restored. Don't click update, click the option to restore the phone. This will erase everything on the phone, download a new iOS installation file and install it on the phone.

During the restore process, I ran into some issues. The first time, it failed about 30 seconds into the restore for error code 9. I put the phone back into recovery mode using the volume up, volume down, hold power method. After the prompt displayed again on the Apple Devices app, I went through the restore process again. This time, it made it more than halfway through the restore before returning error code (1109). 06B4.0000. Using tips from this post: Receiving an error code (1109) in the mid… - Apple Community, I changed the DNS settings on my PC to Google's DNS Server, put the phone back into recovery mode and attempted the restore process a third time. The third attempt at restore completed successfully. I don't know that the DNS settings change actually affected anything, it may have worked the third time without it. I just figured changing the DNS settings isn't really a big deal, so I did it.

After the iOS restore process, I used the backup I made when I first started this process to recover all of my data. You will have to answer a few prompts on the phone first like language preference, wifi network, etc. Finally, it will ask how you want to setup the new phone, I chose the option to restore from a backup on a connected computer. At this point, the Apple Devices app on PC should automatically display a menu where you can choose to restore the phone from a backup. You select the backup on this screen and start the process.

When restoring data from the backup, the app appeared to freeze the first time. I disconnected the phone, plugged it back in and attempted it again. The second time was successful. During the second attempt, the Apple Devices app actually recognized the iPhone as my iPhone's name instead of just generic iPhone. I think because of this, it allowed me to access the restore from backup option from a different screen and displayed a progress bar (it was actually a progress circle). The iPhone displayed a purple screen that said "restore in progress" during both attempts.

The whole process took me about 4 hours. I think it would've been less than half had I not had any issues with the Apple Devices app. This is why I would suggest using a Mac (on Mac, this process can be completed using Finder).

Finally, I connected my phone to carplay this morning and had a 25 minute phone call on my way into work. It did not disconnect at all.

That is extremely insightful since I will be testing it shortly on my 2022 Lincoln Corsair which has the same Sync 3 software as the 2020 Lincoln Nautilus but of course different hardware. It will be interesting if there’s any change or if the same symptoms occur. I do have an Apple case open for this and they want to collect data during an active call to try to determine what is causing Car Play to disconnect, I just have to give them about an hour’s notice to set it up remotely into my phone.

Thanks for the tips - I tried disabling bluetooth and there was no change. However Wi-Fi calling is not enabled so I will try that. The possibility of the Sync 3 software taking over has crossed my mind but this problem was not present with the iPhone 13 which was used in this car previously. It has not been ruled out that Ford will not have another software update for Sync 3 but seeing it is an aging OS for their vehicles they very well may not update it any further.

Let me explain more. To connect to CarPlay I have to connect via Bluetooth and WiFi. So I did. Then when I look back at the Bluetooth connection, regardless if I’m on a call or not, Bluetooth shows that I am not connected to my truck only connected to truck via wifi and CarPlay is working in all other ways but during a call it will disconnect CarPlay and reconnect by itself.

So since it states that Bluetooth to my GMC truck CarPlay is disconnected at all times, I just disallowed it, deleted it. What’s the difference then right?

Well apparently iPhone states it’s not connected via Bluetooth to my truck but apparently it is and needs to be even though my iPhone says it’s not connected to the truck. Hope this makes sense.
