Seeking Wireless Laser Printer compatbile for both Sierra & Sequoia

Seeking wireless home-use monochrome laser to serve 3 older macbooks (10.12 Sierra) as well as 2 newer macbooks (10.15 Sequoia). Currently I connect my HP401dne to our Bell modem via an ethernet jack on the printer which works fine, but the printer is failing so I need to replace it. Haven't found any wireless printers compatible with both Sierra & Sequoia though. Brother says they have one but that it can only connect to macs via USB rather than wi-fi, so that sucks. Other brands/models have no ethernet port so can't plug those into our modem. I've heard Airprint can print from any mac, but when a printer's specs compatibility list doesn't include Sierra (or Sequoia in some cases) I wonder if it'd be useless for any of my macs with those systems -- or would airprint work just fine, even if the OS's aren't listed in the printer's compatibility specs? If someone can enlighten me about that, as well as offer any suggestions for printers with ethernet jack, as well as compatibility with those systems, that'd be appreciated. Thank you.

Apple's AirPrint has been available since OS X Lion (10.7), so any AirPrint-capable printer should be fine. AirPrint works over both Ethernet and Wi-Fi. One thing to take into consideration is that AirPrint's capabilities have expanded with each newer macOS release so your Sierra Macs may not see the same printer options that your Sequoia ones do when using AirPrint.

Sticking with HP, the following laser printers support, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and AirPrint:

  • HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw
  • HP LaserJet Pro M404dw

NOTE: If you get an AirPrint-enabled printer, don't install software or drivers from the printer manufacturer. If you do, your printer's software may not be updated automatically whey you use Software Update. Of course, this is a mute issue if you use AirPrint, which does not require printer drivers at all.
