This happened to both the 4TB of internal storage and a 4TB external SSD.
While the space is supposed to be recovered after emptying the Trash bin and waiting a few hours, this does not happen. Days later the space is still unavailable.
Is there any solution?

How are you determining the available space?
Interesting info and I appreciate that you folks are taking the time to try and help but MacOS still unable to do basic tasks that MSDOS could do 30+ years ago. To answer the space question from above:
4TB - size of drive
2.3 TB - used
1.7 TB - available
60 MB (not GB) - actually used according to Inspector
Notice that it also depends on what you delete on an APFS volume: a duplicate file takes no space and deleting a duplicate file frees no space.
