iPad Pro 13" too bright when opening cover

From the first day I got my M4 iPad Pro 13", the screen turns on WAY too bright when I open the case cover. It’s in a Zugu case, so the cover opens like a book. I’ve used at least four other iPads in the past in similar Zugu cases, and none of them have had this problem. I’m just guessing, but it seems like maybe the iPad is getting a wrong idea of how bright or dark the room is, thinking it needs to blast the brightness to compensate? My easiest workaround has been to turn off the ipad, leaving the cover open, then turn it on again — it always gets the brightness right when the cover is already open.

It kind of defeats the purpose of waking on opening the cover when I have to immediately turn it off again.

Does anybody know of a better way to address this problem?

The behaviour that you describe does appear to be unexpected...

When turning-on a shut-down iPad, during the initial boot process, the screen will initially illuminate at high brightness. As soon as the iPad has successfully restarted to a running state - and initialised its sensors - the screen brightness will immediately adjust to the ambient lighting conditions (subject to your iPad's chosen settings).

If your fitted case supports the auto-lock feature (i.e. has an embedded magnet to operate the corresponding iPad hall-effect sensor), opening the cover of a running iPad should illuminate the screen as determined by the iPad's ambient light sensor. Unless your iPad's brightness settings are set to maximum - and the ambient-light sensor disabled - the iPad screen would not be expected to be at maximum brightness unless you are in very bright lighting or outdoors.

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad - and you can explore your available options:
