Can no longer hear incoming and outgoing cellular phone calls using Apple CarPlay.

My vehicle is a 2016 Hyundai i30 with only a wired Apple CarPlay connection, which worked flawlessly for 8 years with iPhones 4, 6s, XR and 15 (up until an iOS update in late March 2024).

Aside from the current issue of no audio with cellular calls, all other aspects of CarPlay appear to be working as they should.

I have tested this issue with my current iPhone 15 Pro, my son's iPhone 15 Pro Max and my wife's iPhone 15 and ALL now have the same problem - NO VOICE audio with both incoming and outgoing cellular phone calls. All three iPhones have been progressively updated since the problem first appeared in March 2024 and now have the latest iOS 18.4.1 which still has not resolved the issue.

An extensive internet search has determined that many others are experiencing the same problem.

I have tried everything recommended by Apple Support AND those with similar issues, without success.

Results of my own troubleshooting, in addition to ALL Apple Support suggestions are as follows:

  1. I swapped out the SIM card from my iPhone 15 Pro and put in into an old iPhone 6s with iOS 15.8.2, which happily rectified the problem, but obviously not a solution with the family all now using iPhone 15.
  2. Some of the suggested 'solutions'' (eg: rebooting, reseting iPhone network and/or infotainment unit) resulted in cellular calls being heard initially, but just when I thought the problem had been solved, it reverted to not being able to hear calls via cellular connection.
  3. CarPlay occasionally connects via cellular call, with audio but goes silent some 5 to 10 seconds later.
  4. Further troubleshooting determined that I could make FaceTime AUDIO calls without any issues, but again not a solution unless everyone is contacting me via FaceTime audio.
  5. If I activate the iPhones inbuilt speaker once the cellular call starts (with no sound), both I and the caller can hear each other, but again not ideal and certainly not as it should be (ie: hands-free through the car speakers) and as was prior to the March 2024 iOS update.
  6. Cellular calls using Bluetooth connectivity work as they should through the cars speakers, when the iPhone is not plugged into Apple CarPlay via USB.

Upon contacting my Hyundai dealership, they reinstalled the latest CarPlay update to my vehicle which did NOT rectify the problem.

I have contacted Apple Support on a number of occasions since March 2024 without any resolution, however I note that the iOS 18.4.1 update mentions '.... addressing a rare issue that prevents wireless CarPlay connection in certain vehicles'. I was hoping that this update might finally resolve the problems I have experienced for over a year now, but as my issue involves a wired CarPlay connection, it didn't.

Any ideas, solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Same for me except I cannot play any audio from iTunes, Spotify or Amazon music thru CarPlay wired or wireless but the phone calls and maps all work. 18.4.1 still broken and I have a 2025 Civic Si. Good thing I have built in Spotify which plays music while Apple fixes yet again 18.4.1.

Now I can’t connect wireless but wired works except playing music no matter the music app.

I’ve tried everything that has been suggested and it’s still broken.

Tried my spare android Motorola phone and no issues.

Also tried another iPhone with 18.3 and works perfectly in my 2025 Civic Si.

If CarPlay doesn't detect your iPhone, make sure CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. If Content & Privacy Restrictions are turned on, tap Allowed Apps and make sure CarPlay is enabled. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, and then tap Forget This Car.

If you're still having trouble with your car's audio system using CarPlay or Bluetooth, try the Aux cable. To get it fixed, there are two options:

  1. Take your car to a reputable car dealer or car audio specialist. They have experienced technicians who can diagnose the problem with the Aux cable. This could be a loose connection, a faulty cable itself, or an issue with the system's Aux port. They'll be able to repair the issue or recommend a replacement cable if needed.
  2. Consult your car's infotainment system manuals. These manuals often include troubleshooting sections that might address common Aux cable problems. You might find instructions for resetting the system, cleaning the Aux port, or confirming the cable's compatibility.

Before taking your car to a dealer, it's always a good idea to check the manuals first. This can sometimes save you time and money if it's a simple fix you can handle yourself. However, if the manuals don't offer a solution, or you're uncomfortable tinkering with the system, then a car audio specialist is the way to go.

Hi SravanKrA

Thanks for your detailed response.

Unfortunately, your information/suggestions have not resolved the problem.

As mentioned in my original post, my CarPlay issue is solely to do with Cellular phone calls, whereby I and the caller cannot hear each other when the call is answered.

All other aspects and features of CarPlay work fine, as they did for the first 3 months of me upgrading to an iPhone 15 Pro.

Additionally, I don't have any issue when I put my SIM card in an old iPhone 6s and plug it into the car, or ring and receive calls via FaceTime AUDIO.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond.
