Why can't I trade in my Apple device at the store after ordering online?

I don’t know why Apple cancelled trade in at the store. I placed an order to upgrade and I came into the store but I was told that because I ordered online (even if it was for pickup) I cannot trade in at the store. This was super convenient last time. I came into in, I transferred everything, and I got my credit right away. Plus I was able to trade in for a “customized” model as well, which is not allowed in store now.

I’m asking more out of a need to voice my frustration, although some explanation would be good. I’m guessing it’s that it makes supply chains easier. But what if my product gets damaged on the way back? Again this is just so inconvenient compared to what was available before, DURING THE PANDEMIC NO LESS.

You can still trade in at the store and that is what I recommend as opposed to sending it off for Trade in Value. When trading it at the store you will get a Gift Card and if you purchase at that time, the Gift Card can be used for that purchase. If you already ordered your phone online, then went to the store, the Gift Card will be used for a future purchase.

The one thing I am not sure about is if you used the payment plan for the online purchase is if you can use the Gift Card to apply for one of those payments, but I am sure someone else may be able to provide more clarity on that.
