How do I free up space after iOS update on iPhone?

Is it possible to claim back the amount of memory that updates require to be of any use at the time of the current update but say 6 updates later and they are useless and outdated. Can you reclaim the space that they were using/used or is it done automatically?

thanks

As stated, update storage is not accumulative and replaces the previous version. So there is no unnecessary storage being taken up from previous versions, but only the current version. Now there is a special case when some updates may introduce new features etc that can take up more storage, but it is very small.

Good morning lobsterghost1. Good thing I stumped upon this thread, and with you contributing. Last time I was at an Apple Store the specialist said that the updates storage stack up on each other and accumulate, and that the only way to get rid of the old stuff is to erase and restore by installing a fresh copy of the iOS. Thank you very much for clarifying.
