Possible to update MacBook Pro 2017 Mojave to Sequioa OS?

These are the specs for my MacBook Pro:

MacBook Air 13-inch, 2017

Current OS: Mojave 10.14

Processor: 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 6000 1536 MB

Is it possible to update the OS to Sequioa?

And if so, are there any issues I need to be aware of?

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

If you want to get the longest and most productive use from your 2017 MBA, then yes, you should upgrade the OS.

Mojave was released in 2018. Support for it ended about four years ago.

Your MBA can be upgraded to macOS 12 Monterey. Monterey was last updated in July of last year and support is about done. But it is still three years newer than what you are running now.

If you don't take advantage of the newer OS, then you rob yourself of years more of productive use of the hardware. Mojave doesn't take full advantage of the more modern internet security protocols and the capabilities of applications with modern coding. By sticking with it, you unnecessarily limit the lifespan of the computer.

Please be aware that upgrading to any OS newer than Mojave may result in breakage. By that I mean that old 32-bit applications will not run in the modern OS. Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey and newer only run 64-bit coded apps, utilities and drivers. This includes MS Office apps, Adobe and others.

Before you commit to that upgrade, you can download and run this free utility to check the compatibility of your apps: St. Claire Software – Go64: https://www.stclairsoft.com/Go64/

Any 32-bit apps will have to be upgraded or replaced if you decide to move forward.

Many thanks for your advice, Owl-53.

Can't afford a new machine, so will have to wait until there are some secondhand latest Macs available.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my queries. :)

All the best.

You are welcome

Explore the Apple Trade-In  Process where the Value of the exiting device could be used against the cost of a new Apple Computer.

Notation - Some devices and depending on the computers age may have little to no value at Trade In time.

But at least the device will not arrive to the Land Fill Site and be recycled in a responsible way by Apple

Or Shop Refurbished Apple computers at an Apple Reduced Cost, lol to that

Have used both previously and have been satisfied each time.

FYI = trading a M1 Mac Mini against the cost of the new M4 Mac Mini

The reduced costs amounted to saving the Federal Taxes of 13% and a bit more in my country

In the short term, I agree with the guidance from @ D.I. Johnson

This might give you just enough time to scrap together enough Money for a new or newer computer

In the long term, not so much

Many Third Party Developers concentrate on the more recent version of macOS

Some, not all, may have even stopped developing for older version of macOS

Case in point is Microsoft Windows, if that may apply to your needs

Is there any point in my upgrading to OS 12 Monterey?

Yes, Monterey will run better on your Mac than older MacOS systems and is more compatible with modern software. I have a 2015 iMac running Monterey. If you are not in a position to switch to a newer Mac, I would get the most you can out of what you have.

Alternatively, you can explore used/refurbished Macs from OWC. Like with Apple, they come with a warranty. Some of their deals are remarkablely good ones.
