Spotlight does not index files from Synology NAS shares on macOS Sequoia 15.1
Dear Community,
We recently purchased a Synology DS1019+ NAS, currently running DSMUpdate 3.
On the NAS, we have enabled both AFP (for legacy compatibility) and SMB protocols, and we have activated Universal Search with Spotlight indexing enabled on all shared folders.
However, on our Macs running macOS Sequoia Version 15.1 (Build 24B2083), we are experiencing the following issue:
• Shared folders from the NAS are successfully mounted and accessible via Finder.
• We can search for files using the Finder’s search bar when inside the mounted folder.
• But files do not appear in the global Spotlight search (Cmd + Space), even though they are indexed server-side.
We have already tried the following steps:
• Added and removed the shared folder from System Settings > Spotlight > Privacy, to force reindexing.
• Triggered a reindex via Synology DSM’s indexing controls.
• Tested both AFP and SMB connections.
In all cases, Spotlight only finds the files when searching from within the mounted folder in Finder, but not through the global Spotlight UI.
Could you please confirm whether Spotlight on macOS is expected to index and return results from remote NAS shares with server-side indexing enabled (via SMB/AFP)?
Are there any additional system preferences, command-line tools, or MDM configuration profiles required to enable full Spotlight integration with indexed network volumes?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
