All my iTunes purchases music disappeared

All the music I have bought from apple over the years and stored in playlists locally have disappeared. I recently bought a new phone and got free Apple Music trial. Seems to have happened then. How can I get the music I have paid for over years back on my phone? I will be cancelling Apple Music after my trial. I would never have activated it if I knew this would happen.
