Shortcut to program "Currency" format in Numbers

I frequently open a CSV or Excel spreadsheet into Numbers and then have to go back to the currency columns and select them then hit Currency and then also need to check the Thousands Separator and Accounting Style - is there any way to create a Shortcut which will do that ? Or some easier way? I need to do it all the time == Data Format for Currency can't be standardized, even for USDollar.

Instead of opening the CSV file directly in Numbers, you could consider these steps:

  1. Set up a "receiving" table in Numbers and format the currency columns as you wish (File > Save as Template... if you will use this often to start new documents)
  2. Open the CSV in TextEdit with Settings set to Plain Text, or use another text editor if you prefer that
  3. Select the CSV data in the text editor, type command-c to copy, then click in your formatted table in Numbers (Step 1) and choose Edit > Paste and Match Style.

That is not fully automated as a Shortcut would be, but is simpler than it sounds, and will save you formatting steps.

If the data is coming from Excel, this shouldn't be necessary.

The problem sounds like it stems from the fact that CSV is the lowest-common denominator format and it doesn't contain any information about the type of data in the cells, nor how they should be formatted. Numbers takes a guess, but clearly isn't getting it right in this case.

However, if opening an Excel document (or even copying from Excel), that extended data regarding data type and formatting should be retained.

So the big question is where is this data coming from? I hope it's not originally an Excel spreadsheet that you're exporting to CSV, because if that's the case, you're shooting yourself in the foot. Just open the Excel document directly.
