How can I display compact bookarks / favorites in in the Safari 26.0.1 sidebar? The new version has almost impossible to use.
Yesterday I installed the new version and it is not usable anymore.

your tagline says macOS 15.7. is that correct?
if yes, then there is NOT any way to change bookmarks settings or appearance with safari 26.
however, for those of us on Sequoia, and unhappy with safari 26, you might want to look at FitzltEng’s reply in this thread. You can lay Sequoia in place over the Sequoia with safari 26.0.1 to end up back on Sequoia with safari 18.6 without a system wipe and reinstall.
as well, you might want to provide apple with some feedback. if enough people reply, they might be willing to correct this oversight. Please see Feedback - Safari - Apple.

a new option is you may want to check out 6x6's reply in this discussion. if you are comfortable using terminal, their suggestion fixes things for those of us on sequoia with safari 26.0.1.
I am also having issues with the new safari bookmark sidebar view. The default view seems to show an icon, the web address and a description line for each bookmark. It takes up far too much space. After all, I have bookmarked the sites I want because I use them frequently and know them well - I just need a simple, compact list view. This is a real step backward in my view and I hope enough people dislike this such that it will revert back to the original option.

I agree. but there have been a couple options posted in this thread (and other threads) that you could use to get the safari sidebar back to a more familiar view.
