I've been using the DVD Player successfully with an external drive for years.
Since updating to macOS 26 the DVD Player is "jittery" - something like only 10fps being shown - it is even but significantly jerky to watch.
If I use VLC then the same DVD plays beautifully and smoothly.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

I would use what works.
The current stable release of Tahoe including bug fixes, security updates is macOS 26.0.1

To be proactive you can file a bug report / submit your Apple Feedback here: Product Feedback - Apple
I and others have seen the same issue and reported this to Apple. For now I use VLC.
