Folders in Finder show faint iCloud icon

I have two folders that appear in Finder with a faint iCloud icon next to the name. I had this once a long time ago, and I recall that the reason was some documents were not syncing properly with iCloud. Eventually I lost some files permanently. I can't identify the files and I don't know how to "force" a sync - if that's what is necessary. I am operating on the most recent software update.
