Apple ID password change not working, can’t login to mac

A few hours ago, i was gifted a macbook pro by a family member. It has been used before, but it was formatted for me to use.

When setting up, I assume i made a mistake in setting my laptop password as the one I intended to set isn’t working.

To fix this I tried to change it by logging into my Apple ID, but my password wasn’t working for it. It was the same password I use for everything and worked on other devices. I changed it multiple times, but it never worked.

I didn’t change it online, and I have tried booting into safe mode, but it hasn’t fixed anything. What is left for me to do? How can I fix this?

I am relatively new to using Macbook devices, so I might be doing something wrong or stupid. Please let me know!

The password used to login to the Mac is not usually the same password you use to access your Apple ID Account. It may be the same IF you consciously decided to use the same password for both instances.

Also, changing the password to your Apple Account does not change the password used to login to your Mac.

I suggest you get together with your generous family member and have them help you out of this jam.
