My Magic Mouse has become unreliable. A simple left-click or right-click may or may not have the intended result, such as opening a file or moving the cursor in a document. It takes repeated attempts before it functions as intended.

This happened to an older mouse last year but luckily I borrowed a functioning mouse from a friend. Now that new mouse has the same problem. I hope it's not time for a new one.

The A1657 is a "2nd gen" Magic Mouse that came out in 2015 ... so it could be up to 10 years old. However, it wasn't replaced until 2024 with the "latest" "3rd gen" model (A3204).

Regardless, it may be possible that it has failed (as you suspected) ... or that its rechargeable battery is depleted ... or it just may only need to be cleaned. You can also try resetting it.
