Mac Pro shows black screen with white stripes, stops at 40%

I have a 2012/3 MacPro (cylinder shape with the latest possible system) which is now suddenly showing a black screen with some evenly spaced white stripes down the screen. Progress bar gets to about 40% and stops there. Nothing else.

Suggestions or prognosis?

Without yet a service, any idea if the data is retrievable?

cheers 👍

that does appear to follow the computer, not the display.

try safe mode, as I described above.

Because it does not load the accelerated display drivers, it MIGHT complete startup, and allow you to enable File Sharing or Screen Sharing to another Mac.

if safe mode does not complete startup, on an older machine like the 2013 Mac Pro, you can still invoke Target Disk Mode, which is implemented in the older Mac's ROM, and does not require MacOS to boot up.

Keep in mid through all of this that you have another copy of your files on your backup drive.

Re-installing MacOS re-writes around 15 GB of data and over 350,000 files.

If you get to the point that you are retrieving files off a damaged drive, you want YOUR FILES, not all of MacOS as well.

if you do need a new Mac, the cheapest Apple-silicon Mac outperforms you old 2013 Mac Pro by a wide margin. Be sure to get minimum 16 GB RAM, preferably more.

good luck!

post back if you get stuck!

Hi,

well after a few attempts to reinstall the OS from the internet- nothing has changed.

Wgen I reboot to reinstall the OS, I select the wifi and it begins a download. Few minutes later it attempts to restart and I get the same as before - start-up stalls at about 30-40%. Left it there for a day or more at times.

Im officially stumped. 🤔

seems like only a new Mac might be the option (or service)unless anyone has new ideas.

cheers

Hi HWTech,

I ran the Diagnostic as you outlined and it shows ADP000 - No Issues (lol).

So I then choose continue to start , I choose English and then it connects to my WIFI and starts downloading the recovery OS I guess. Then just stops like before at the 30% mark… for hours… seems the internet OS downloading stops or isn’t there or…

Thanks… got a little more into (no issues found)

can I run other diagnostics?

<< Time Machine- elements folder >>

The "Elements" folder in Time Machine typically refers to a backup of files related to applications like Adobe Elements, which may be stored within the Time Machine backup structure. If you're having trouble accessing or seeing this folder, it might be due to how Time Machine organizes backups or the specific settings of your backup

if your Mac won't start up all the way, you can look at this article for some ideas:

another way to make progress is to use Safe Mode.

Safe Mode does a number of different things.

On older Intel Macs, hold shift at startup, but have your userid and password at the ready.

On newer Apple silicon Macs, shut down your Mac. Then as you start up again, hold the power key until the ’Startup Options’ screen appears.

A parade of unusual things happens.

• Your Mac loads just enough of the kernel to do a disk check. Then it proceeds to do a disk check. This can take an extra about five minutes.

• your userid and password are required, even if you normally auto-login. So have them handy.

• Your Mac adds ONLY a minimal set of Apple-Only extensions, Not including graphics acceleration extensions. Screen updates will therefore be wonky and slow, but it ultimately should be correct.

• Your Mac assumes defaults for as many settings as possible, including screen resolution. This is the key for re-setting the screen, but there is a little more to it: Resolution is likely to be temporarily lower and settings ordinary. Use this as a starting point to customize settings to your liking, if that is your issue.

If you make NO changes, regular mode will just revert to what you had set before, so DO make changes!

Any changes you make in Safe Mode will "stick" in regular mode after you restart.

• after a Restart in normal mode, your Mac will take slightly longer to start up [once] because it rebuilds some system caches.

"Works in Safe mode, fails in regular mode" implies "It's typically something you added".

>> But in your case, it could also be that the graphics card has died.

restarted few times more and seems ok except: it’s now just logging in with no account or user credentials check.
I opened the user account system to uncheck and recheck all the user login attributes but it still seems to bypass the user account validation… hmmm.

We cannot say because we cannot see anything. You may want to take it to a Mac specialist for assistance since I don't think we can assist any further if you need to attempt to recover your data from this SSD. I think someone needs to physically see it first hand.

Now starting to investigate to now migrate and or backup all data.

Put the Mac into Target Disk Mode and connect it to another Mac using a Thunderbolt cable to attempt to access the data on the SSD assuming you did not erase the SSD.

(oh and the disk utility shows errors on the Time Machine- elements folder hmmm)

"Time Machine- elements folder"??

If you want to access a TM backup, then you use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to restore your system from the TM backup. Or, you boot the Mac normally & use the TM app to access the data within the TM backup. You are not supposed to directly access the TM backup using the Finder.
