Can I return the MacBook Air M4 15"? It's too hot, I can't work on this.

MacBook Air M4 15" is uncomfortable to work with, it's always warmer than body temperature.

Is this normal? Is this model simply broken / defective overall? Or is it just mine? Online reports all say it gets hot.

I got a maxed out version with 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD. Maybe the RAM makes it hotter?

Anyway as it is I can't use it for work, my hands get hot and sweaty, so I use my old M1 MacBook Pro 16 which is always nice and cool to the touch.

The 14 day return window is already over - I initially thought maybe it's just the setup.

I really just want to change it out for a MacBook Pro model.

My colleagues don't seem to have these issues on the 13" Air model. I am thinking it might be a bigger issue on the 15?

Post the EtreCheck report using the Additional Text option when posting and we will be able to tell you if your setup is the reason for the increased CPU usage. The report contains no personal information.

  • Increased CPU use equals more heat.
  • Changing it to a MacBook Pro is not possible beyond the 14 days.

We are other end users and cannot give you an official or binding answer. Apple does not respond here.

M-series Macbook Airs have no cooling fans. If you are playing a lot of video (including gaming and video-conferencing) or doing heavy tasks like compiling, rendering, or video editing, it may get hot.

You should certainly seek an Apple evaluation given your level of concern.

I would add to that using an external monitor and installing useless aftermarket anti-virus or so-called "cleaning" apps. Etrecheck will tell us a lot with finding potential software issues without revealing any personal and/or secure information.
