Keychain empty on MacBook Pro after reset; how to restore?

Keychain now empty. My keychain was not showing my saved passwords when I entered the unlock password so I checked how to repair this and followed instructions to 'reset the default keychain' I now have a new keychain which is completely empty. At least previously my keychain would put passwords into a web page, even if it wouldn't show them to me. Now I have no passwords at all. Does anyone know how to restore the old keychain? and then how to fix it so I can view my passwords if needed? I am running a MacBook pro M1 with sonoma 14.6
