Logic Pro: How to specify MIDI note duration

In Logic Pro, how can I specify that MIDI notes I recorded are eighth notes, not quarter notes, so that Logic automatically changes the bar length throughout the piece? Thanks!

You want to quantize the length of the recorded notes.

Select the region(s) that you want to edit and then enable the piano roll editor.

Select the notes you want to quantize and find Functions > MIDI Transform in the left side of the panel.

There you can define the note lengths in the manner you wish.

Agree with @Iaamusic. If what you want is to alter the number of bars in the piece without altering the recording, then a shift in the time signature is required.

To get from your 60 bars of 6/8 time to 180 bars without changing the notes, then you'll change the time sig to 2/8. Logic will make the adjustment, the notes will remain unchanged and you get your 180 bars of music.

Otherwise, it becomes a combination of changing note durations across the piece using MIDI transform with an alteration of the tempo as well.

Thanks D.I., but I'm not seeing anything in MIDI Transform that does what I need. Logic is putting 18 notes in a bar, but I need to redefine bar boundaries so that only 6 notes are in a bar. (The time signature is 6/8). Ideally I'd leave the recording unchanged but just change where Logic puts bar boundaries. So right now, the piece is composed of 60 bars, but I need it to be composed of 180 - without changing any of the notes.

Thank you both. Unfortunately changing the (project) time signature is having no effect on the number of bars in the MIDI region. I got into this pickle by recording with the wrong time signature (2/4), and at the wrong bpm (56) when it should have been 6/8 and 168. I don't know why the MIDI is not adjusting (currently it's the only track recorded). I just gave up and re-recorded at the correct signature and bpm.

Thanks again for taking the time.

Given I’m not sure how you’ve recorded your piece and presuming it’s not more straightforward just to play what you want from the outset, the way to adjust would be altering the time signature to get where you need. key signature does not change the midi note duration , D I Johnson gave you a way to do that. You could highlight all the midi notes (if they’re equal values) and just cut them, or use time handles but I think what you’re wanting interns of logic rearranging where the bars are is signature.
