Hi
My external hard drive is connected to my MacBook Air but when I use Time Machine it tells me to try again when it is available.
I've used Disk utility to erase, to unmount /mount etc but I'm still getting the error message.
I would be grateful to receive any help

Time Machine needs a drive that is exclusively used for that purpose.
Erase the external drive again by choosing the APFS case-sensitive format. Then refer to the section “Set up the storage device as your backup disk“of this article to add your drive: Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support.
Plug in your external drive, open the Time Machine options and make sure you’ve selected the right drive to make the backups.

The ext hard drive icon is on the screen and I’ve added a file to it but it is not backing up in Time Machine
I’m getting the message that the ext hard drive is not available

I didn’t realise that the Time Machine ext hard drive was solely for Back ups
