What is covered under 1year warranty?

You have a cracked screen. Accidental damager or abuse will void the warranty. It doesn't matter what kind of product you're talking about or who made it. You broke it, you will have to pay to have it repaired or replaced.

An AppleCare purchase probably would have been wise.

That can cover some specified cases of accidental damage, usually with a deductible.

I’d not expect any hardware vendor to cover a blown speaker or a cracked screen on any standard warranty.
