Print dialog options changed after update

Print Dialog options changed under Tahoe 26.1.

Printing under Tahoe has changed much for the worse. I have an Epson XP-4100 printer (print, copy, scan, duplex).

  1. I can no longer enter nonconsecutive pages to print. I either need to print desired pages one at a time, print all pages within a range (like 1-5 instead of 1,3,5), or select individual pages from a sidebar preview (small images make it hard to know if the selected page has the content I want).
  2. Printing duplex now requires me to go to an entirely separate print option window (accessed from the very bottom of the main print wndow) and click through to get to the option I want. The printer sometimes ignores the command.
  3. Grayscale printing sometimes needs to be called up again on a separate option window. And again, printer sometimes ignores the command.

So this is unpredicatable and clumsy and time consuming. I spoke with Epson, who said I have the latest driver and I should take my issue up with Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, as the way these apps handle the print dialogues is all different.

I do have the latest driver, have reset the printing, etc etc., so I'm quite sure I'm as up to date and things are unfortunately working the way God intended.

Is anyone else struggling with this kind of problem? Any fixes?

Hope this is the final update. Finally got my Mac connected to the Epson via Airprint (it shows up as Driver version 4.0 in the Systems Settings/Printers & Scanners instead of as the driver downloaded from Epson).

As a result more of the necessary features now show up in the single print dialog window, although nonconsecutive page selection is not available in some apps unless I select them from the previews.

Under the Epson driver, I had to use two different print options screens, and the preset would not save duplex printing no matter what I did.

So the solution, as neuroanatomist indicated, is to use Airprint instead of Epson driver. Not a perfect solution but better than what Epson provided.

I see no meaningful differences between Sequoia and Tahoe. Are you connecting with a cable or wirelessly, and if the latter are you using Epson software or Apple's AirPrint? The printer supports AirPrint wireless printing/scanning and that's a far better way to connect than wired, because AirPrint requires no drivers.

The box to enter discontinuous pages is a feature of Word, for example (Tahoe then Sequoia):

In Apple apps like Mail, that option is not present and you need to select pages in the sidebar:

Double sided and color options are in the same place in both versions of macOS.

I suspect you are not using AirPrint. If that's the case, try it:

Thanks very much for your suggestions.

I am using a wireless connection. I was using the Epson driver downloaded from the Epson website. I tried deleting the printer and then printing using Airprint, but the printer does not show up as an option and I have to reinstall the Epson driver.

The feature options available, particularly for nonconsecutive printing and double-sided printing, seem to vary from app to app.

In any case, it is much more complicated than before. I'll keep trying. Maybe I can get Airprint to work. The Epson printer I have is Airprint capable.
