I have a Macbook air, I have recently left a formal office environment and intend to do partially remote working from now onwards but I am very dependent on a double screen - has anyone got any screen extenders that they have used that they can recommend using with a Macbook air

Your external monitor options may depend on which Macbook Air sub-model you have. Monitor support and port types can change over time. Please do about "About this Mac" from your Apple menu to find "Sub-model" including screen size as shown in this screenshot:
