Let's back up just a bit to clarify things.
Are you planning to buy an iPhone in the U.S.? We ask because new iPhones in the U.S. no longer use a SIM card at all. They use an eSIM......software....not a physical card.

You generally should not see prolonged periods w/o any apparent screen activity.
You’d also be well-served to have a solid WiFi connection to the internet as well.
