2020 intel IMac keeps restarting after updating to OS Tahoe.

2020 iMac intel keep crashing/restarting after updating OS to Tahoe, some time it goes to login screen, twice in recovery mode since the problem started, I’ve run a diagnostic on HD no issues found, I was told by someone my issue could’ve been related to installing Macfee antivirus software and even MS office, they reckon the HD has been corrupted and will need changing, I can even login some time, last time I managed to login I deleted the antivirus and MS office and few other M-Audio midi Music software I installed , it made no difference, before this happened I had messages for few days about unexpected restart in the morning when I will go to use it but it worked,

any advice will be appreciated.

thank you.

Who did you purchase iMac from? Did you get this screen the first time you turned it on?

Macs do not need an anti-virus, cleaning, A/V, speed-up or any type of security app installed.

Please download and run Etrecheck.  The free version is sufficient. It's a diagnostic app that reports the makeup of your system and Mac. It does not report any personal information.

Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and after clicking on the Reply button use the Additional Text button to paste the report in your reply.

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine the cause of the problem.

No. So you don't have a backup, right? If you have a Time Machine backup made before this started you can use that and only lose a few files that you gained between the time of the backup and now.

If you have no backup at all, your between a rock and a hard place. If you take it into an Apple  Apple Genius Bar they may be able to save your files and fix the problem.

If you can boot into recovery mode, Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down) you should be able to reinstall the system without erasing the drive and your user data.

Once you get back up and running you should get an external drive that's about 2-2 ½ times the size of your boot drive and start a Time Machine backup.

Thank you Toad for taking the time to reply, this is my first Apple Mac experience, I bought this used Mac from the seller sometime in June or July, only reason I installed antivirus because I thought there was a bug on it, I think this issue started when I installed MPC beat by M Audio who suggested that software wasn’t compatible with Tahoe OS which I had updated on my Mac from Sequoia, after a while as this is my office computer when I logged in the morning I started getting restarted error messages even though I left the Mac on standby over night, after few days of this restarting messages this completely went into panic mode I think that’s what its called scenario, it started working by itself after it was left unplugged over night till there was another update 26.1 which I updated this week I think on Wednesday evening, after the update the same issue started again, before posting the initial post I had removed the antivirus and Windows Office as it was suggested this could be causing the issue I’m having, I took it to a shop for them to reinstall the OS even though I would’ve lost some important documents amongst other stuff, they couldn’t install new OS, they said it’s the HD which will need to be changed which they can’t do, I don’t think its HD issue, I did manage to login this morning but after few minutes it restarted itself again, I also saw a message some setting being changed by the system which were preventing the OS from starting.

any advice for any further steps which can be taken to sort this mess I will really appreciate it. thank you

Shazad

I purchased this on eBay from a private seller, it’s worked fine for 2-3 months, this all started after I updated to IOS Tahoe and installed a MPC beats by Akia, till then I had no issues, yesterday it went into recovery mode and I started the reinstall Tahoe process and ran for about 45 minutes and then it restarted itself, I can’t install anything as I’m unable to login to the main IOS, sometimes it will take me to login page once I enter the PW it just restarts, I’m in the process of reinstalling Tahoe again, it shows 2 hrs remaining hopefully it will complete the process and not restart in the middle.

Next time when I see the error report I will take pictures of them on my phone as I can’t login, I’m trying for the second time to reinstall Tahoe in recovery mode, last time it started downloading the IOS and then restarted at the 2nd stage of the download or install process(it was a black screen with apple logo and progress bar), running diagnostic in disk utility it showed no error on the drive, only thing none apple left on the system is now only live mail.

will keep you posted.

I’ve booked a an appointment with Apple Store this Saturday hopefully they will sort it out, once again thank you very much for your help and advise really appreciate it. Shazad

First, there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This documents describe what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community and Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

Unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer's, school's or bank's servers, they provide false security from a privacy standpoint.  Read these two articles: Public VPN's are anything but private and Security Risks: The Dangers of Using Free VPNs (eccu.edu).

Additionally, a new study ("Apple Offers Apps With Ties to Chinese Military”) is specifically about VPN apps in Apple’s App Store.

Uninstall any of the types of apps I reference above and their supporting files according to the developer;s insetructdironss. You can use the share ware  Find Any File to search for the supporting files and remove them.
