Hi drtrees,
welcome to this Apple (user-to-user) Community!
Sorry no-one has answered your post to the community, so far.
Despite being a classical music-lover, am no expert in this area. Yet your request deserves some sort of a reply, if only to get a discussion underway. At the least, others then have more opportunity to join in and share their experience and expertise.

Re: "Can you play Apple Music through a conventional amplifier-wired speaker setup?"
Wondering what hardware you have in mind to send Apple music via the wired connection to your amplifier.
Having the right combination may make all the difference between yes and no ? We don't know anything about your current hardware.
The way I understand it, besides the necessary subscription to Apple Music, the (free for subscribers) Apple Classical Music App needs to be installed on an iPhone, iPad or Android device. Seems the classical music can also be accessed online.

Re: " I have found out that playing orchestral music through a wireless setup doesnt work
- distortion in the mid to upper ranges. I've tried different speakers (Denon, Polk) and nothing helps.
I'm not prepared to spend a lot of money for a state of the art wireless, "
Apple Support's online article (link below) seems to suggest that "lossless" quality music can be played using wired or wireless. Introduction to Apple Music Classical - Apple Support.
Eg: says: (of Apple Music & Apple Music Classical)
"Both apps support the highest audio quality (up to 192 kHz/24-bit Hi-Res Lossless). Select albums and recordings are available in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, for true multidimensional sound."
Lots more info. in the resource: Apple Music Classical User Guide - Apple Support :
The "Table of Contents" lists various topics leading to detailed articles.

All the best :-)
