Why Does Numbers Formula Writer Block Visibility of Cells Next It?

What is the benefit of Numbers blocking visibility of the cells to the immediate left and right of a cell where a formula is being entered? To me, it seems like a problem. When entering a formula into a cell, I often need to refer to the cells tnext to the formula. Why does numbers deliberately block visibility into the cell left of the formula?
