To help narrow down your RAM search for a 2017 27" iMac at OWC.

Tip:
This late in the game, I would not spring for an expensive 4 module kit for a 7+ year old iMac.
At most I would only add a pair of 8GB or maybe a pair of 16GB modules to the existing pair of factory modules.

Why are you wanting to add more RAM to your iMac?
If it's to speed it up it won't help. Boot speed, app launching and file saving speed are affected by the speed of the drive. If you have a Fusion Drive then you will need to replace it with a SSD to increase general speed of your iMac.
However, that model is considered Vintage by Apple and will not be getting any system updates anymore.
If you want to upgrade your drive the smartest approach is to get an external SSD from OWC (MacSales.com), clone your current boot drive to it and boot and run from it. Cloning can be achieved with Carbon Copy Cloner according to this user tip: Using Carbon Copy Cloner to Make a Bootable Clone of Intel Mac.
If you decide to get a new Mac consider the following: a 10 Core Mac Mini M4 with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD ($1084) with a 32" LG 4k monitor ($331) from Amazon.com) is $1415 which is $541 less than a similarly configured new 24" iMac ($1956) re 07/2025. Keep your keyboard and mouse from your current Mac for use with the Mini.
I got the above Mini with a 32" LG 4K monitor w/speakers for only $60 more than the 27" (didn't know the Mini had a speaker). There are many monitors available in 27" size on up for $100 to $500 depending on what features you want. The monitor prices are before tariffs.
Just some food for thought.

Macs can be extremely picky about their RAM and the folks at OWC/macsales know their Macs.
They are easy to work with, too, if you have questions or concerns.

Yeah... no.
Upgrading the RAM will not allow your 2017 iMac to run any macOS newer than macOS 13 Ventura.
Stop.
Funny thing is, I ordered a Mac mini, it is to be delivered tomorrow. I spent some time with a “specialist” from Apple before I ordered it, so I thought it would work. Ha ha. I was told today, I could not use my 27” iMac as its primary monitor. So I am planning to return the mini. Which led me to try to upgrade the old one. Ugg I’ll call OWC tomorrow. They sound like a good company
Keep the mini and spend another $150 or so on a new big monitor.
The iMac appears to be nearing end of life for you. Forget upgrading it. It is about 9 years old now and classified vintage by Apple. Let it go.
What to do before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac - Apple Support
First determine if your Mac would benefit from additional memory. If not, then you would just be wasting your money.
It's very easy to determine if your Mac's performance is being limited by available memory. Please read Check if your Mac needs more RAM in Activity Monitor - Apple Support. If its unitless "Memory Pressure" graph is frequently "red" then your Mac would benefit from additional memory. If not, it won't. It's that simple.

The mini I am expecting is: MAC MINI/10C CPU/10C GPU/16GB/256GB-USA.
I have used half of the 1 terabyte of the hard drive on the old iMac. (Late 2017, 8 years old😉) I was planning to use some of the hard drive from the old one, as well as the monitor. Ugg Again, the Apple technician and I came up with this plan.
thanks for all the fab advice. I just don’t want it to be too complicated.

I really hate to say this, but the new Mac mini's 256 GB drive is going to be problematic.
You already have 500 GB of stuff (1/2 the 1 TB drive) on the old iMac. Migrating that data to the new mini with 1/2 again the capacity isn't possible. And 256 GB just isn't much capacity at all today.
Never buy a new Mac - or any computer for that matter - that has less storage capacity than that of your current machine. It's just asking for trouble looking forward.

on the inadequacy of the 256GB drive.

When you get it take it immediately (within 14 days) into your nearest Apple store for a full refund, not questions asked. Then reorder a Mini with a 1 TB drive.

Getting a Mac Mini with sufficient internal storage & memory is the best option and pair it with a good monitor as others have already mentioned. This is a much better option than another iMac or putting money into the 2017 iMac since when the Mini needs to be replaced you will still have your monitor which will save you more money (and it will save you money now as well over an equivalent iMac).

FYI, don't plan on using the internal drive of that old Mac, especially if it is using a Hard Drive or Fusion Drive since the internal Hard Drive is most likely worn out or failing after all these years.
If you want to attempt to repurpose that old 2017 iMac, then installing macOS onto an external USB3 SSD would be the best option as it would allow you to bypass the internal drive and also allow you to reuse the external USB3 SSD with another Mac once you decide to finally retire the 2017 iMac. As others have mentioned, installing more memory is unlikely to help with performance and you can easily determine whether lack of memory is an issue with your current workload by looking at the Memory Pressure graph in Activity Monitor.
Ugg Again, the Apple technician and I came up with this plan.
Does not sound like this Apple technician knows much about older Macs, or that tech just wants to sell you upgrades to a Mac that should be retired (at least for its current workloads if booting from an external USB3 SSD doesn't solve the performance issues).
Performance issues can also be due to running anti-virus software, cleaning/optimizer apps, and third party security software.....none of which are needed on a Mac and which usually causes more problems than they solve including huge performance issues.
I really appreciate your advice. I am looking at purchasing what you suggest above, but am wondering if I should get 2 TB. Is there a downside to that? Also what you describe above is $999.00 not including monitor.
Not from Michigan,
It has been posted here for ages that iMacs are not monitors, they are computers. They cannot even work in target display mode with new M-series Macs. Had you asked this question before ordering the Mac Mini, we would have suggested the purchase of a 27-in display for it. The latter might cost less than the RAM you plan to purchase for the 2017 iMac.
I am using an M4 Mac Mini Pro with a 5-year old LG 32-inch 4k display and the extra screen real estate is invaluable over a 27-in iMac which resides in another room.
The downside to 2 TB is money. It's overly expensive. I've found that 1TB is plenty. I have a 1TB with my Mini M4 and currently only use 370 GB. I still use 4 external 1TB SSDs for additional storage so my internal has always lots of free space. I also have a 4 TB drive for Time Machine to backup my 5 SSDs.
One can add additional eternal storage reasonable inexpensively when you need additional storage.
Thank you. I ordered it. Now for the monitor. My head is spinning on Amazon. They all seem the same, but different prices. I don’t game, just design on photoshop, and normal web surfing, email etc.
but I would like speakers, as I tend to watch how to videos and news etc.
this one is inexpensive, and with speakers, what do you think?
Excellent choice! That's the one that I got. But I didn't get the Black Friday price. 😔
I got the 32" because I intended to run it at a lower resolution to accommodate my problematic eyesight and wanted the extra real estate.
