One of my USBC ports does not read but charges

I have a macbook air M1 16gb ram and 512gb hard drive. It has two usbc ports. Both can be used to charge but ONLY ONE can read a thumb drive or other external HD.

Now on my other macbook air M1 which has 8gb ram and 256K HD, both ports and be used for either charging or reading.

Does anyone know why this is happening with my USBC ports on the first one?

Thank you!

It sounds like you have a hardware issue with your laptop which will need to be repaired. Have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine your laptop to provide you with a repair estimate. If you are lucky, only the USB-C port is damaged & needs to be replace, otherwise it require the Logic Board to be replaced which is expensive.
