Screen Share Screen Time Hack Fix?

I have a 14yo who, with his friends, found a screen time hack that I can’t figure out how to disable.

They FaceTime a friend, allow the friend remote access, and then the friend can turn off screen time or adjust any settings. I appreciate the ingenuity, but wondering if there’s a way to stop the remote access.

The answer is that it is the app that allows the screen sharing, so you can block access to that app. FaceTime is just one app where you can share a screen and there are many others. Being able to share a screen in an app, is not a bug, it is a feature of that app that is being used. Screen Time allows you to block the app, not every feature built into the apps.

After you block FaceTime if they choose to move to Zoom, that does not require any ingenuity and not a hack in any way. The only thing it tells you is that they know what they are doing is wrong and will look elsewhere if you tell them they cannot do something.

I get that, and we’ve had talks about it. I’m not concerned about what he’s doing specifically (just watching YouTube after 10pm). I’ve seen it done with my older son and his friend, so I know it’s happening this way.

You prevent the app that is being used to share the screen, FaceTime in this instance, or block communication with the person sharing the screen.

As stated, there are always going to be workarounds, such as using Zoom instead of FaceTime, so you would then need to block that app. In addition, they can turn to another friend if you block one of them.

The issue seems to be knowing what you expect and looking for ways to break the rules. That is a problem that can only be addressed by you, and technology is not going to be the answer.

They don't turn off screen time on your sons device, the other friend just shares their screen to your son so they can use their phone for apps/communications where that is all being done on the other phone.

With Screen Time on your son's phone, you can prevent communication with this person so that will not happen. Of course, they could also turn to another friend that you would have to block as well. It is also possible to not allow FaceTime at all so that will not happen.

A willful disregard to your clear instructions is not something that is ever going to be controlled by technology alone, and you may even need to take the phone away until they can respect your wishes. If basic phone use is important, there are still "dumb" phones for around $20 with no apps/internet access that I bet your son would not want to be even seen with.

It's screen sharing of an unblocked phone, surely nothing more sinister? Integral part of FaceTime. All or nothing. Unless you can say that ALL the devices are blocked from Youtube, but this is a hack that can bypass one of them?.

..

Ah yes, one of the participants has a device that is not parentally safeguarded. Good thinking.
