Getting existing Time Machine onto a new, larger backup drive

The space on my Time Machine backup is running out, and I don't want to keep losing older backups. (Also, drives don't last forever, and I don't want to push my luck with an 7 year old drive).

I understand that duping programs are no longer able to clone Time Machine backups. So in a discussion with Apple today, the solution seemed to be to copy the oldest available backup to my current iMac, which can copy such files because it's an Apple device. That way there will be an "Old" image as the new Original Baseline, then everything that gets backed up after that will be the Comparison Snapshot, and we keep building from there. So:

1) Get the larger drive (new).

2) Move some of my data off the current iMac to make room.

3) Select the earliest available snapshot/image/backup from the Time

Machine

4) Copy that to my current iMac.

5) Hook up the new larger drive

6) Send that old backup to the new drive

7)Set new drive as the Time machine target

8) Run a backup to capture the current snapshot

The helpful support person said this would work, but I am not sure how to tell which of the files on my current Time Machine drive is the one I need to snag.

But before I start down this road, I wanted to get second opinions from the Community. Have I missed something I need to pay attention to/worry about? The overall goal is to have a new Time Machine drive ready before my new iMac arrives next week. (At which point the adventures with Migration Assistant begin)

Many thanks!

It is true that you can not copy the old Time Machine backups to a new external drive.

Remove the old Time Machine backup drive from the old Mac and set it aside for later file recovery.

Connect the new Time Machine backup drive to the old Mac, setup and make a few new Time Machine backups.

Connect the new backup drive to the new Mac during the initial setup for Migration, continue using the new drive for backups.

I've struggled with this for several hours. Most of the advice that I found online led to dead ends. Here is what appears to be working. At the moment, my iMac is copying my old drive to my new drive.

  1. Decrypt your old drive. That ran for about 18 hours on my iMac (M1).
  2. Format your new drive (do not encrypt it), via Disk Utility, to "AFPS" "Guid Partition Map".
  3. On your desktop select your new drive and use "Get Info" to see permissions. Ensure that "Ignore ownership on this volume" is checked.
  4. On your desktop select (click once) on your old drive.
  5. Drag your old drive onto your new drive. Let it fly!

As simple as that sounds, it is actually working. Estimated copy time displayed is "About An Hour".

When this process completes, I will attempt to access the old backup files on the new drive. Whether that works, or not, I will post the results on this thread. Before that I will have to walk my dog. She will be soon. Give me three hours. Good luck!

UPDATE: When the dust settled, only my most recent backup (and supporting files) was copied onto the new drive. The files appeared intact. I opened a few. I'll keep trying to find a way to copy the old drive in its entirety.
