Finder scroll momentum stops abruptly when "Use Groups" is enabled


Summary: I am experiencing a bug where Finder scroll momentum stops abruptly when "Use Groups" is enabled in any folder. This issue occurs system-wide across all accounts and persists in Safe Mode. Disabling grouping immediately restores smooth scrolling.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open Finder in any folder (Downloads, Pictures, etc.).
  2. Enable View → Use Groups (e.g., Group by Kind, Date, Size).
  3. Scroll with the trackpad.
  4. Observation: Inertia/Momentum stops exactly when Finder attempts to render a new group header (e.g., "Images," "PDF Documents").
  5. Turn off grouping and scrolling becomes normal again.

Troubleshooting Attempted (All Unsuccessful):

  • Safe Mode: Issue persists.
  • New macOS User Account: Issue persists.
  • Spotlight Rebuild: Disabled, erased, and re-enabled; issue persists.
  • Resets: Finder preferences reset, QuickLook cache reset, System QuickLook & Finder caches cleared.
  • File Check: Removed potentially corrupted media files.


Conclusion: All evidence suggests this is a system-level Finder/QuickLook/Spotlight metadata bug, not related to specific user files or settings. The issue affects usability and is reproducible whenever grouping is active.


Request: Has anyone else encountered this? I am looking for a fix or confirmation if this is a known bug in the current macOS version.

Also unable to replicate, scrolling is normal including momentum in various folders with lots of files/folders when Use Groups is enabled. Fine with the internal trackpad of my MacBook Pro, an external Magic Trackpad, or two fingers on a Magic Mouse.


Seems like you've performed reasonable troubleshooting steps.


Confirm that you have sufficient free drive space and nothing is using significant system resources (Activity Monitor).
