Do Find My People locations transfer to a new iPhone

I'm switching from my iPhone 14 to my iPhone 17, keeping them both signed into the same Apple ID. Will the "Find My" app for the "People" section allow me to see my friends' real-time locations on both devices (iPhone 14 and 17), or will they have to share again for my iPhone 17?

You’ll see all your friends’ locations on both iPhones without them having to share again, because location sharing in Find My is tied to your Apple ID, not the device. As long as your iPhone 17 is signed in with the same Apple ID, the “People” list appears automatically on both phones.

But your own location can only be shared from one device at a time.

You can choose which iPhone broadcasts your location by going to Find My → Me → Share My Location From → [Select Device].

Did you set up the 17 after a factory reset and restore the backup made with the 14? , or just sign someone out of the 17 and sign in without a factory reset?

Do you see both phones in the devices tab?

I have no idea. My friend only entered my phone number in his contacts, and by re-sharing the location, I can only see it on my old iPhone 14 (the one linked to the phone number in my friend's contacts). On my iPhone 17 (new) I have the same Apple ID but a different phone number, he sees me, but I don't see his. That's why I was wondering, maybe by adding my cloud address to both contacts, should I be able to see it on both?

If you have multiple devices linked to one Apple ID, you must manually select which device will share your location in the People tab.

  • Multiple Devices: To share another device's location, you typically need to have more than one Apple device in your account. This could be an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  • Single Device: If you only have one Apple Device (iPhone, iPad, or Mac), then that's the only device associated with your Apple ID. In this case, there would be no other device to choose from for location sharing of the device.

Choose which device to share your location from

You can share your location from a different device. For example, if you share your location from an iPad, you can share your location from an iPhone that you own instead.

  1. On the iPhone or iPad that you want to share your location from, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Find My.
  4. Tap Use this [device] as My Location.

Yes, I shared my location with my friend from my new device. However, even when he shares his location with me, he can only see it on my old device, not on the new one (they both need to be logged into the same Apple ID). So I was wondering if it might be a problem because he only entered my phone number and not my iCloud address in my contact card. If he were to edit my contact card to include my iCloud address, should I be able to see it on both?

It is a really strange thing.
