Mac mini: Clicked suspicious link, what next?

Hi all

i have a Mac mini. In a moment of not concentrating, I clicked a link in an email without checking the sender.

It took me to a website that had ERROR across the top. I immediately closed the browser and deleted the email.

I then disconnected the internet connection.

Changed the master password on my password manager, apple account, banking & super accounts.

Do I need to do anything else? Should I be installing a malware thing to remove any malware that may have been installed?

I do have a Norton Subscription not yet expired, but I had removed it as the Mac was running super slow from it. Should I reinstall it? Or is there a better one?

please be kind - I’m already beating myself up as I’m normally absolutely diligent with this stuff, and the email was about Amazon Prime which is due around now.

thanks!

Mac mini, macOS 15.6

You did everything right — outside of clicking a link in the email message of course, an act that is in itself completely harmless on Macs.

No other action is required, or justified. You really didn't need to change passwords, although it's not a bad idea to do that once in a while anyway.

In that case be sure to draw his attention to the following, incorporated by reference in its Appendix:

Scam, scam, everywhere a scam: Scam Pop-ups, Scam Viruses, Scam Receipts, Scam Purchase

These scams are commonplace and target the elderly in particular. Sadly many of them fall victim to them and become intimidated into handing over a lifetime of savings. There is generally no recourse.

Spread the word.

Thanks John for the link to your article. That is very helpful.
I'm going to get my elderly Dad to read it too. Unfortunately before I read your response I did reinstall Norton and ran a clean. Too late now, but I’ve uninstalled it.

Good! Such things can only cause trouble. "Norton" in particular has been known to be difficult to eradicate.
