What should be seamless videos in FCP timeline, are not seamless

I recently recorded video and audio for a community Christmas concert. The video files on my camera are limited to 4GB. When I added them to the library and inserted into the timeline, for some reason they are not seamless. They are off by a frame or 2 (shooting at 30 fps). I have been using this same computer, same configuration for over 10 years. I tried this in iMovies as well and found the same issue. I then used Adobe Premiere Elements and the issue did not happen. I also tried it with Davinci Resolve and it did not happen. FCP is my preferred editing app. But I can't seem to find out why after all these years, the files are not seamless in the app(s). Yes I have an older iMac and FCP is an older version and cannot be updated because of the age of my hardware. But without having changed anything in the camera settings or in the app settings, and now what should be seamless isn't seamless, and only with Mac legacy apps? I did remove and reinstall FCP (from Time Machine). That did not fix the issue. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

What camera? What are the properties of the source files?

Is the audio and video recorded by the same device, or are they captured separately?

How do you import them into FCP? Via the import function, or by dragging from the source card into the timeline?

What does "not seamless" mean? You see a disruption at the point where one 4GB file ends and another begins?

Something else?

They are off by a frame or 2 (shooting at 30 fps).

What is off? The audio sync? The clip duration? Are you confident the project you are working in has the exact same frame rate as your source material?

I have an older iMac and FCP is an older version and cannot be updated because of the age of my hardware.

Exactly what hardware and what version of FCP?

Camera: Panasonic GH4, 3840*2160, 93.9Mb/s @ 29.970 fps, MPEG-4

I have a separate audio recorder. But the (not) seamless files in question are direct from the camera. It is both the audio and the video that are not seamless, when the 2 clips are put back to back in the timeline. And the audio portion I can see there is a "step" in between the 2 clips that is not natural.

I use the import function to import direct from the SDHC card.

Yes, I see a disruption at the point where one 4GB file ends and another begins (what seems like 1 or 2 frames missing in between).

What I mean by "off" is not being seamless. They are "off" because they are not seamless. The audio within each clip matches the video. It is only that gap in between the 2 clips that is an issue (for me).

I am using a late 2014 iMac, 27" 5K retina display with 4GHz Quad Core Intel Core i7 processor, running Big Sur 11.7.10, 32 GB 1600MHz DDR3 ram, and FCP is version 10.5.4.

I have not double checked the frame rate of the project and the source material. I haven't made any changes since the last videos I edited (to the camera or to FCP) and I have never encountered this issue before. I will go back and confirm those settings though, to be thorough.

Thank you for taking the time to engage with my issue. I appreciate you.

Some cameras like the GH4 use segmented files because of the 4 GB FAT32 file size limit. Newer cameras that use ExFAT don't do that.

The segmented files must be "spanned" or stitched together by the NLE. I can't remember the exact FCP behavior, but there are several items that can effect this:

  • Whether the files are imported from the original folder tree, vs "bare" or isolated .mp4 files
  • Whether the files are imported using the FCP file>import dialog or via drag/drop from Finder to FCP.
  • Whether the files are imported using "copy to library" vs "leave files in place"

I think some combinations of the above will import them as spanned files, but I cannot remember the details.

If you want the benefits of "Leave Files in Place" (saving disk space) and the benefits of spanned clips (one long file), you may need to use an external tool to span them before importing to FCP. I think the commercial tool EditReady or the free tool Shutter Encoder will do that, but I haven't tested that in years.

1) Since the files work in other editors correctly, I think we can assume the files themselves are Ok and contain all the expected frames.

2) I haven't worked with spanned files in a while, but IIRC you select the first file in the Import pane for ingest and the others are automatically concatenated to create the working file in FCP, is this not what happens? Again IIRC you should not have to import the clips separately and assemble them in the timeline.

3) As Joema suggested, you could use a 3rd party app such as EditReady ($$) to assemble the master clip, if you are on deadline.

4) None of this explains why you are getting unexpected results if you are following the same workflow that has been successful before and there has been no hardware or software change.

The OP is using FCP 10.5.4 from 2021. There were some fixes back then about spanning clips on import. I don't remember the details. It's possible he doesn't have those fixes or the fixes for one scenario broke something else.

For a closer inspection, he would need to provide us sample clips exhibiting the problem, along with the exact procedures for his import. IOW was it "leave files in place" or not, using the FCP import dialog or not, imported from the original folder tree or not, etc.

If it was an actual bug, any fix would be done on the current version of FCP, not a custom "hot fix" to 10.5.4. Since the OP cannot upgrade, that implies he could not use a fix, even if it were a bug and Apple fixed it.

Since there are so many different import combinations, it's possible one of those might make the GH4 clip spanning work. If that doesn't show any benefit, using the free Shutter Encoder utility may span the clips before importing into FCP.

If it's just a couple of frames per segment, a "quick and dirty" approach is just to cut the video at those points. Even for minimally edited event shoots, it's considered good practice to cut those to tighten them up.

Thank you for the great info and advice. I have downloaded the Shutter Encoder to try and splice the clips before adding them to FCP. Hopefully that will work. This is a volunteer project that I've done for nearly 20 years. https://www.youtube.com/@SaipanPacificWindsConcertBand This is the content I have been creating for the community band here. My wife is a member and current (10 years already) director. I will get back to the project when I leave work and find out if the splice worked as intended and will update later.

Thank you!!

I did not try the QuickTime Player process you suggested. I did not know that was possible. I have only seen QTP play one clip at a time, in separate windows even. I will search how to link the 2 clips in one window and see how that goes. As to your 2nd question, I am not sure. I believe I edit in non drop frame time code. In my limited knowledge, I assume that non drop frame is what I would want to use.

Thank you for engaging!

Thank you for engaging here. I used "leave files in place" and import the files through the import dialogue panel. Each concert I record is a new library, new event and then each song is its own project. But with this going on, I'm limiting the import library and doing each song as its own event and project now too. I know this won't resolve itself. At some point I'll just need to upgrade the hardware.
