To put a .mp4 on your Mac onto an Apple TV you need to import the file into the TV app and then it is copied into your Media folder/Home Videos: similar folder structure to how the Music app works...Your computer must be running in order for the Apple TV to access the videos which are stored on the Mac.

Can you do the same thing with your Iphone and your Music library? Can I access my entire music collection on the fly?
