To buy the right cover, do you measure the iPad vertically or on the diagonal? In other words, if the size of the cover is 10.2 inches, how is that arrived at?

the size is the diagonal length from corner to corner.
buy a cover specifically for your model iMac, not the size.
button orientation may change from model to model and not align to a case designed for another device with a similar size.
