When I opened my MacBook this morning, I got a message that said my old desktop content was stored in a folder, and now my desktop now has the same content as an iMac desktop computer that we have in the house. These are two totally different computers and i don't want them connected to each other. Why did this happen?

It happened because you, or someone with access to your account on the Mac(s) turned on Desktop and Documents in the cloud.
