what if the previous owner is deceased? on an iPad mini I acquired from a friend.

I am trying to restore an ipad mini I acquired from a friend whose mother passed away.

we don't know what her mother's apple ID password is or was.

what do we do now?

You have encountered Activation Lock the theft deterrent feature. Without the Apple ID and Password, you cannot use the device. If you can produce the original sales receipt, you can take it with a Death Certificate and proof that you are a legitimate heir to an Apple Store and they may be able to help you. Call ahead for an appointment and be sure to ask just which documents they will require.
