Problems trying to pair iPhone 6 with an Apple Watch

When I try to pair my phone with a first generation Apple Watch, it gets as far as checking software and then says iPhone software needs to be updated but phone says it has the latest software.

The watch has been reset and my phone never had a Watch paired with it before.

Any suggestions?

The iPhone 6 can use iOS 12. Do you have an iOS 12 version on your iPhone? If so, it should be able to pair.

You may be told you have the latest software on your iPhone if iTunes or your computer's operating system cannot supply you with later software.
